Summer Fuel Survival: Use the Left Tank
The UAZ dual-tank system is one of those things that sounds simple, until summer arrives.
Many owners do not really know how it works, and in hot weather that can quickly turn into misery: high pressure in the tanks, strong petrol smell, fuel pushing out where it should not, and in extreme heat even fuel boiling or vapour problems.
The graphic below explains how the system normally works. In normal temperatures or cold conditions, you can use the dual-tank setup as intended.
Use the left tank only when possible. Keep the right tank empty or only partly filled unless you really need the extra range.
Why the left tank matters in summer
On the classic UAZ dual-tank setup, the engine takes fuel from the left tank. The right tank is not connected directly to the fuel pump. It works more like an extra reserve tank that feeds into the left tank.
That works fine in normal use, but summer heat changes the rules. Fuel expands when it gets hot. If both tanks are filled too high, there is less room for expansion and vapour. That is when old filler caps, tank breathers, hoses and connections can start making life interesting.
Extra summer notes from real UAZ experience
- Do not fill both tanks to the brim in hot weather.
- Do not force in the last bit of fuel after the pump clicks off.
- Avoid filling both tanks completely and then parking the UAZ in the sun.
- Leave room for fuel expansion, especially on hot days or long trips.
- Check for petrol smell around the tanks, filler necks, fuel hoses and caps.
- Before hot trips, also check your coolant level, radiator cap, fan belt, fuel filters, tank breathers and fuel hoses.
- If your UAZ starts badly after a hot stop, hesitates, smells strongly of petrol or feels like it is starving for fuel, let it cool down and check the fuel system before blaming the whole vehicle.
Carburettor models need extra attention
For carburettor models, heat soak can be very real. Old fuel lines, tired pumps and dirty filters can turn a hot day into classic UAZ theatre very quickly.
If the engine starts badly after a short hot stop, runs unevenly, or feels like it is not getting enough fuel, the problem may not be mysterious. It can simply be heat, vapour, old rubber, a weak pump or a partly blocked filter showing up at the worst possible moment.
The graphic explains how the system works, but summer heat changes the rules. Leave space, keep it simple, and do not let your UAZ turn a fuel stop into Soviet barbecue perfume.
Before a hot summer trip
Use the left tank as your main summer setup. Keep the right tank empty or only partly filled unless you really need the extra range. Check the simple things before you leave: fuel hoses, filters, filler caps, tank breathers, coolant level, radiator cap and fan belt.
It is not about panic. It is about preventing the typical small UAZ problems before they become roadside theatre.
